“What can an educational therapist do for me?”

The goal of educational therapy is to empower students to become independent, self-confident, lifelong learners.

An educational therapist works with clients to improve academic performance in areas such as reading, writing, spelling, math, study skills, and critical thinking skills. Focused attention is given to remediation of gaps in learning and strengthening weak foundation skills that contribute to the client’s struggles.

A therapist will also address non-academic skills that are critical for academic success: learning strategies, organization and time management skills, problem solving, attention, self-esteem, developing awareness of strengths and weaknesses, self-advocacy skills, and motivation.

Each client’s socio-emotional needs are addressed by taking time to establish and grow a relationship that results in a safe place to express feelings that affect learning, and by promoting insight into the connections between emotions, behavior, and learning.

About

Our Story

We are Larry and Kathy Shudra. In 2024, as most of our contemporaries dreamed of retirement, we embarked on an unexpected journey with Iconix. This year, we established Cognitive Canvas Learning Clinic in the Houston, TX area. We have identified as lifelong learners for decades, so this is not completely out of character for us. We are excited about all of the new information we have learned so far during our Iconix training. We are even more excited to apply this new knowledge to benefit our clients.

Larry earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree at Baylor University and holds an all-level music teaching certificate in Texas. He has nineteen years of experience working with middle and high school bands, and eighteen years of experience teaching elementary music. In addition, he provides private music instruction to both children and adults. Kathy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a certificate in Educational Therapy from University of California, Riverside. She has five years of experience teaching in public and private schools, and more than twenty-five years of experience working one-on-one with students of all ages including twelve years as a homeschool mom.

We have joined the Iconix network because we are passionate about helping students of all ages overcome their learning challenges. Iconix truly is a better way to learn. To have this knowledge and not share it is incomprehensible. Everything we have experienced and accomplished thus far in our lives has absolutely prepared us for the unanticipated new chapter.

Services

Assessment     An accurate assessment is an absolutely critical first step in creating an effective, personalized plan of intervention. Initially, a good assessment provides information of vital importance about an individual’s level of developmental and academic maturation. Periodic assessments, formal and informal, may be used to monitor progress. Without a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis, any plan devised would only be a guess as to what action should be taken. One-on-one Intervention     One-on-one academic intervention is the heart and soul of educational therapy. Educational therapy is not tutoring. As Iconix instructors, we understand and base our instruction on the hierarchical development of visual thought — first learning to see and then seeing to learn. Aligning instruction with developmental hierarchies yields better outcomes. Each intervention plan is carefully crafted to address each student’s specific constellation of needs. Seeing My Time®     Many students and adults struggle with deficits in time management and organization skills. The Seeing My Time program is appropriate for middle school students through adults who have difficulty with time management, procrastination in connection with starting work or projects, meeting deadlines, planning ahead, over-scheduling, and poor paper management. Handwriting Without Tears®     It is estimated that between 10 and 30% of elementary students experience difficulty mastering handwriting skills. Research also shows a positive correlation between academic success and the quality of handwriting.
